Thomas Jefferson Courter (1831-1923) was born on 20 July 1831 in North Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the first child born to Josiah Courter and Lucretia Shippen. In the 1850 he was living with James and Henrietta Beach in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey working as a carpenter. Thomas married Gertrude Amelia Lathrop on 26 June 1854 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. Then in 1862, Thomas began his military service serving during the Civil War ars a Corporal in Company D of the Twenty-sixth Regiment Infantry Volunteers. This regiment was part of the ‘Vermont Brigade’ of the Army of the Potomas. It took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, Chancellorville, Salem Church, Bell Plain, and Deep Run Ravine among others. When Thomas mustered out in 1863 he had achieved the rank of Acting Sergeant. Thomas Courter passed away on 17 May 1923 and was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey.

He was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the son of (2) Josiah COURTER and (3) Lucretia SHIPPEN. He married Gertrude Amelia LATHROP 26 June 1854 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Elijah LATHROP and Mary Beach WINANS. She was born Oct 1836 and died after 1910.

  1. 2. Josiah COURTER was born 4 Mar 1803 in North Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey, and died 11 Feb 1877 in Parsonage Hill, Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the son of (4) Thomas C. COURTER and (5) Elizabeth GOULD.

  2. 3. Lucretia SHIPPEN was born 17 Feb 1810 in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey, and died 3 Apr 1899 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. She was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of John Blair SHIPPEN and Mary Ely DECAMP. Children of Lucretia SHIPPEN and Josiah COURTER are:

  1. 4. Thomas C. COURTER was born abt 1775 in North Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey, and died 1834 in North Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. He was the son of Elias Smith COURTER and Mary GOULD.

  2. 5. Elizabeth GOULD was born 16 Feb 1783 in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey, and died 30 Dec 1867 in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. She was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Josiah GOULD and Elizabeth COLIER. Children of Elizabeth GOULD and Thomas COURTER are:
